I grew up in Oklahoma. I think it gives me a greater appreciation and understanding of citizens of Third World Countries. And, Oklahoma has it all! I’ve known of James Inhofe since the early 70’s. Senator Inhofe has improved with age. He just gets goofier and goofier.
Senator Inhofe in an interview with Rev. Rob Schenck (video broadcast seen on MSNBC on 7/28/2009) referred to the “politics of Jesus” as conveyed to him by Doug Coe. Doug Coe is the leader of “The Family” best known for organizing the National Prayer Breakfast. “The Family” is a secretive network founded in 1935 and is also known as “The Fellowship.”
The Politics of Jesus…now that’s an unusual term isn’t it? Especially if you hold to the Christian belief that one of the reasons Jesus was rejected as the Messiah by the Jewish faith was because he refused to be the “political” leader. Jewish religious leaders wanted a guy who was going to settle the score for the oppression the Jews had endured.
That said…let me suggest to Senator Inhofe that he might want to examine the words of Jesus as stated in the New Testament.
Let’s start with the basics. “Give unto Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s.” These words from Jesus are much of the basis of the separation of church and state. Believe it or not…for many of us that believe in the Christian Faith…the separation of church and state was originally conceived with these words out of the mouth of Jesus…not Thomas Jefferson.
“Do unto other as you would have them do unto you.”
Blessed are the merciful.”
“Blessed are the peacemakers.”
“If any man will sue you at the law and take away your coat, let him have your cloak also.”
Politics of who?
Oh…and here’s a dandy…”When you pray, you should not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Truthfully I say unto you, they have their reward. But you, when you pray, go into your closet, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father in secret: and your father which sees in secret shall reward you openly.” Oops…there goes the National Prayer Breakfast! Unfortunately we all probably share in praying for show…cause let’s face it the seasonal family diner has been the center of the “show prayer” for way too long. Even nationally…just go back and take a look at the Rev. Rick Warren’s doosey of a “show prayer” at President Obama’s inauguration. Not much reward for the Rev. Warren there…but, he got a lot of national TV face time…thus, I guess he got his reward.
Back to the Jesus politics.
“Don’t lay up treasures on earth, where moth and rust corrupt, and where thieves break in and steal. But, lay up treasure in heaven.” Uh oh! There goes the gospel of prosperity and power. In Senator Inhofe’s defense he may be under the impression the Oklahoma is actually heaven.
And, here’s a good one…”whatsoever you do unto the least of these, you do unto me.” Oh my! How’s your record so far Senator Inhofe.
Followers of Jesus need to realize they are supposed to act like Christians…not GOD!
To top it all off, the fine senator confessed during the interview with Rev. Rob Schenck that he went to Africa at Doug Coe’s suggestion to spread the “Politics of Jesus.” And, President Obama did not carry one…NOT ONE county. What do you want to bet they will re-elect Senator Inhofe again and again.
What are your thoughts about the all the media hype, leading up to Obamas school speech today. Which I thought was most approriate for school age kids and proud that my children were allowed to watch the speech.
